How exciting - so many decisions to make on this journey - wishing your partner all the best with the self-publishing and hoping to provide more useful info as we go!
This is a great post, Sara, very informative and some stuff I didn't realise, having not signed a contract for so many years :( I'm really sorry to hear about the podcast, you must feel very cheated by that!
Great article and very reflective of my experience. Waiting till the book goes ‘out of print’ is a furphy in this modern world. All the publisher needs to do is run a 99c deal on the ebook and bingo it is back in print 🥴
Thanks Alison - yes when OP doesn't work any more then it makes rights negotiations even more important! Hard when some of our older contracts don't account for these changes either.
Thank you for the insights! 👍
You’re welcome!
Thank you for being so open and honest about all of this, Sara.
I'm still standing at the door of my author career, but forewarned is forearmed I say.
The more I know going into this, the better it will (hopefully) be.
Absolutely Maggie - the more we can do to shed light on the industry for those coming in, the better, as it's getting ever more complex!
Great insights, thanks. My partner is busy writing fiction and has decided to self publish, great to hear about all the pros and cons.

Thanks Annabel - yep the podcast falling over was a bit of a sad moment and a learning curve too.
Much food for thought here. Thank you for taking the time to write and share this, Sara.

Very useful information - thank you!
