It makes me so happy how you always put a positive spin on things. This is a space that’s both informative and mentally safe, and I love that.

I do think my reading habits have changed over the last few years! Some of that is due to technology I'm sure, but I think for me it's also the result of becoming a mother, starting my career as an author and illustrator and just generally having less capacity to focus on books I used to enjoy. Oh and also my editing work has been quite heavy over the last few years! Nowadays, I still read every single day, but I've been reading lots more romantasy. Some fantastic, but some mediocre and full of plotholes and moments that make me cringe – yet, I still finish every single one because they're 'easy' reads for me. Gone are the classics, lit fiction and historical fiction I used to devour. It doesn't mean I won't go back that way again, just that for now I'm reading what's perhaps the equivalent of mindless bingeworthy television.

Absolutely get where you're coming from Melissa - my reading matches my life stages too and I don't always have the capacity for big books! I long for that time, and I've noticed I haven't found too many books I've loved this year, but then my brain has been all over the place at times so not always easy to focus!

I hear you on it not always being easy to focus! I've actually quite enjoyed some non-fic this year, which isn't something I used to read much of in the past. Again, it's all to do with life stages and whatnot :)

Me too - I love non-fic on audio too.

I agree that both the way that we are accessing books and the type of books is changing. Several of my kids now use audiobooks which is brilliant in my opinion, as they had stopped enjoying books due to the distraction of other tech. I have also changed my reading habits - I never used to DNF a book, but would plough on through one I wasn’t enjoying. Now I have such a huge pile of TBR books that if I’m not enjoying something, I ditch it and move to the next one.

I'm with you Janine! On both the DNF pile and the audiobooks - which have been brilliant for my kids too!

Ah would be interesting to see how that develops!

So glad you mentioned audio books - in our mostly dyslexic household they are key. My son would measure as a non reader if you only count print but is very well read via his ears!

Yes! Without my daughter I might not be so aware of this, but her dyslexia has changed how the whole family take in stories as we love listening to audiobooks together so we can discuss!
